Colorscapes opened for business in December of 1991 with houseplants and colorful blooming plants, we even grew Poinsettias. In 1993 we decided to go "seasonal" and made the switch to being open through spring and mid-summer. Over the past 16 years, we've made changes in just about every aspect of the business, but some things haven't changed. I was going through some files recently and came across a sheet simply labeled Company Success. It was drafted during a business class I was taking at GBC in 1999 and reads as follows:

COMPANY SUCCESS

  • Located just about mid-point, between Reno, Nevada and SLC, Utah, Colorscapes Greenhouse serves customers from all points in between. Gardeners in Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Carlin, Elko, Wells, and Wendover buy our plants with confidence that they will do well.

A scenic 16 mile drive from Elko, Colorscapes Greenhouse is conveniently located in the Spring Creek area. Follow the Lamoille Highway, turn right at the Pleasant Valley turnoff, make an immediate left and go one block.

Colorscapes Greenhouse features plants from both the Proven Winners Annuals Collection and ColorChoice Flowering Shrub Collection. I went over to Provo, UT for the Proven Winners Road Show in October and had a chance to get some information on new varieties and, more importantly for us as growers, "how to" information on cultural requirements so we can present the plants at their best.

Wave Petunias are unbeatable for vigor and flower power and are our exclusive petunia seedling offering for 2008. In pots and hanging gardens these petunias are what customers ask for by name, so we'll be sure to have them ready-to-go. This year's selections include: The original Purple Wave and Blue Wave, both are All America Selections Winners.
Tidal Wave Purple; an upright variety, Easy Wave White and Wave Rose; both are mounding varieties. We will also have Double Wave Petunias in Misty Lilac, Blue Velvet, and Rose.

    And new this year... ShockwavePurple

    Association Membership

I have attended the Utah Green Industry Conference and Trade Show sponsored by the Utah Nursery and Landscape Association since the early nineties. Conferences and industry tours provide great ideas on new plants, progressive landscape designs, and advances in nursery and greenhouse management. As time and water become increasingly valuable resources, our focus continues to be on providing information on planning and planting smart landscapes designed for water conservation.

In 2000 I joined the Perennial Plant Association and was able to attend the '03 PPA Symposium in Sacramento, CA. The PPA continues to be a great source of information and one way to keep up with new and outstanding perennial plants. PPA offerings planned for next season include: Nepeta 'Walker's Low', Leucanthemum 'Becky', Pervoskia Russian Sage, Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm', Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue', Dianthus 'Firewitch', Salvia 'Maynight', and Geranium 'Rozanne'.

    Our goals continue to be:
  • To educate customers so they can be
    successful, confident gardeners.
  • To provide plants that customers can succeed with
so they will enjoy their landscapes.
