We have over 1,000 perennials I would love to sell. They can be viewed and bought (cash or check) by arranging an appointment over the phone @753-5000. Remaining Shrubs I Would Love To Sell
Although we are not a mail order greenhouse, we know that many experienced, new to the area, and just getting started gardeners like to plan ahead and come out with a list of possibilities in hand. Our Availability List Pages provide pictures along with cultural information so gardeners can familiarize themselves with the plants we plan to offer through the season.
We offer perennials for
zones 3-4 with a 80/20 mix; 80% are "tried and true perennials" that I have grown in my gardens and have been happy with the results, and 20% are cultivars of proven plants that are available in a new color or foliage variation that we want to try.
Unfortunately, there is no standardization in the industry, so you may notice the same variety listed in one catalog as a zone 3, and in another as zone 4, or even 5. That's why I think it is important to trial the plants here in our display gardens. We watch for overall garden performance including bloom and foliage through the changing seasons. Indicates a new offering for us
When considering perennials for gardens that have a mix of trees, shrubs, and perennials, note the
Full Sun, Part-Shade, Full Shade, and Water Wise symbols so plants with the same requirements can be grouped together.
Full Sun
Part-Shade
Full ShadeWater Wise
It is my experience that plants that thrive in full sun are also water wise, preferring xeric conditions, and will do poorly when planted in shady areas and/or are overwatered. Likewise, perennials for part-full shade do best when planted in amended soils that hold water (stay cooler) and are topdressed with mulch.
You will see this symbol used frequently on this page, and it's no coincidence. Deer-resistant perennials are sought after in this area since deer move freely through Ruby Mountain landscapes during the growing season. We use the symbol for plants that are listed with government agencies and add plants that we notice deer passing over in our own gardens through the summer months. We also note when plants are highly deer-resistant if deer continue to pass over the plants through fall. Once the snow flies, they are much less particular.
The plant's mature height (HT) and spread (SP) information is provided so that the shorter plants don't get lost amongst taller varieties and so gardeners have spacing information. A plant's growth is dependent on its genetic characteristics, cultural practices, and the climate. For example:
Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus'
Upright; HT:30" SP:24" Late Summer-Fall
The description includes information that this plant is slow growing so customers realize it will take take several years to achieve that spread. Gaillardia grandiflora 'Arizona Sun', on the other hand, grows to 12" in height with a mounding habit growing as wide as it is tall. For this reason, we have described plants as: Upright; the plant will be taller than it is wide, Mounding; the plant will be as wide, or slightly wider, than it is tall, Sprawling; like a groundcover, but spreading outward from a basal stem, or Groundcover; spreading to infinity and beyond.
After the height and spread, you'll find the plant's regional bloom time so gardeners in this area will have continuous color throughout the changing seasons.

Ajuga 'Burgundy Glow' Groundcover
6" Blue flowers with burgundy foliage, Spring-Early Summer Square 3.5" $3.49
Ajuga thrives in part-shade with ample water. The plants spread quickly by runners with small plantlets (like strawberries) that root easily where they come into contact with soil. The flowers are short-lived, but the foliage remains nice through the summer, into fall, and remains semi-evergreen through the winter providing year-round interest in the garden. Works well at the base of trees and shrubs to deter weeds, insulate surrounding roots through the heat of summer and winter frost.
Aquilegia 'Winky Mix'
HT:20" SP:12" Upright, Spring-Early Summer Square 4" $3.99
Columbines are among the easiest of perennials to grow with spring blooms and attractive foliage throughout the season when grown in part-shade. The flowers attract butterflies and ladybugs. Avoid pesticides so ladybugs can keep aphids in check. Winky Mix includes semidouble, bicolored flowers in red, blue, purple, and rose with a white conter. Very showy flowers on compact plants.
Ladybug eggs to larvae; will thrive in healthy gardens. You can buy them and release them in the yard, but it's the flowers that naturally induce, sustain, and keep them in the gardens.
Astilbe chinensis 'Milk and Honey'
HT:30" SP:20" Upright, Summer to Square 8" $8.99
White plumes change to light pink as they age. Bushy foliage with vigorous, prolific blooms. While listed as an Astilbe that tollerates sun, our experience with these beauties is that both the foliage and bloom hold up through the heat of summer when given part-full shade. Because these plants get quite tall and bushy, we suggest planting them in with taller Hostas ex:Regal Splendor.
Campanula persicifolia 'Telham Beauty'
HT:30" SP:30", Summer Square 4" $3.99
Dense, matted foliage stays low while the bell-shaped flowers on wiry stocks rise above the foliage. True blue color is lovely with white Shasta Daisies and/or Campanula 'Takion White'. 'Telham Beauty' is listed as a Top 10 perennial and is outstanding with it's color and long bloom time. Excellent as a cut flower.
Square 4" $3.99 Campanula persicifolia 'Takion White'
HT:20" SP:20", Summer
Shorter than 'Telham Beauty', but with similar foliage and bell-shaped flowers on wiry stocks. Lovely planted in front of Campanula 'Telham Beauty' with Saponaria at its base. The combination of blue, white, and clear pink work nicely together. I planted several of these in a mixed border garden last summer and was impressed with their profusion of blooms and bloom time.
Centranthus coccineus
HT:30" SP:30" Upright, Summer Square 4" $3.99
An outstanding plant for the xeric landscape. Plants thrive through hot, dry summers and -30 degree winters. Plant in full sun, lean-sandy soil, and avoid overwatering. Centranthus blooms attract butterflies and will bloom again later if deadheaded; otherwise, the spent blooms will drop viable seeds. Centranthus has been included as a Top 10 perennial since we opened in 1991.
Cerastium tomentosum 'Silver Carpet'
6" Silver Foliage Groundcover, Summer Square 3.5" $3.49
Easy to grow groundcover for hot, sunny areas. By far our most aggressive groundcover and our most popular. The plant spreads quickly and the foliage remains through the winter months and into spring preventing annual weeds from germinating. I shear the plant to about two inches every fall and use scissors to keep the mat of foliage from spreading into areas I don't want it. Good plant for sloped, full sun areas since it holds the soil in place.
Large Flowering Clematis Square 6" $12.99
Elsa Spath, Lavender-Blue
Mrs. Cholmondeley, Light Blue
Perle d'Azur, Pale Blue
Ramona, Lavender-Blue
Silver Moon, Silvery-Mauve
Sunset, Shown at left
Comtesse De Bouchard, Rosy-Pink
Dr. Ruppel, Pink-Lavender bi-color
Kilian Donahue, Fuchsia-Orchid bi-color
Pink Fantasy, Pale-Pink-Dark-Pink bi-color
Hagley Hybrid, Rosy-Pink
The large, single flowering Clematis we offer are hardy to this area. A reliable vine when given the right growing conditions. Plant in well-drained, amended soil with the foliage in full sun and the roots shaded by groundcovers or mulch. Provide ample water, regular fertilizing, and prune to dieback in late spring. Buds often break late, so we suggest waiting until late spring before pruning. Clematis typically take 3-5 years to mature.
Convallaria majalis 'Rosea' (Lily of the Valley)
Photo currently unavailable
HT:6" Groundcover for the shady garden, Spring-Early Summer
Prefers amended soils. Square 5.5" $5.99
Delphinium Pacific Giants 'King Arthur'
HT:60" SP:24" Upright, Early Summer Square 4" $3.99
The 2' flower stocks rise a full 5-6' above the foliage on this perennial favorite. The blooms last a full two weeks in a vase and the shade of blue is outstanding. The stocks can, and do, break in strong winds, so they can be staked or closely interplanted with natural buffers. I have these planted towards the back of the garden behind tall garden Phlox which bloom a full six weeks later than the Delphiniums and serve as a buffer against strong winds. Tall Shasta Daisies bloom at about the same time as Delphiniums and are another good companion planting. Pacific Giant Delphiniums are short-lived so I plant every 2-3 years.
Delphinium 'Blue Mirror'
HT:15" SP:15", Spring-Summer Square 4" $3.99
Compact variety, lovely between other medium height perennials in the gardens. The electric blue flowers are outstanding when planted with contrasting yellow or white flowering perennials. This Delphinium also makes a goood cut flower and is charming when planted/arranged with shades of pink like Dianthus 'First Love'.
Dianthus 'First Love'
HT:15" SP:12", Spring-Summer-Fall
Full to Part-Shade; Square 4" $3.99
Upright variety, with the intense fragrance that Dianthus are known for. I plant this Dianthus near the deck and in container gardens near the gazebo so I can enjoy their fragrance and watching the butterflies that the long-lasting blooms attract throughout the summer and into fall.
Dianthus 'Firewitch'
8" Groundcover, Spring-Summer-Fall Full to Part-Shade; Square 5.5" $5.99
Forms a dense mat of blue-green foliage that spreads quickly and stays nice through the season. The flowers are wonderfully fragrant, blooms in mass, and will continue to bloom through 2-3 cycles if sheared after each bloom cycle. Plant of the Year for 2006.
Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' and 'White Swan'
HT:30" SP:24", Upright, Late Summer Square 6" $7.99
Coneflowers are slow growing but reliable. Placed towards the center rather than the back of the garden, Echinacea provides late season color in the landscape. Native to the Americas, Echinacea attracts butterflies and is an important addition to the xeric, full sun perennial garden. We suggest planting with Rudbeckias, Gaillardias, and other late season daisies.
Plant of the Year for 1998.
Gaillardia 'Arizona Sun'
HT:12" SP:12" Mounding, Summer Square 4" $3.99
Gaillardias have a long bloom time that can be further extended with deadheading, removing spent flowers and stems. Attracts bees and butterflies so a nice companion planting with contrasting purple shades of Catmints, Salvia, and other perennials that thrive in full sun, xeric gardens.
Gaillardia 'Burgundy'
HT:30" SP:24" Upright, Summer Square 4" $3.99
First offered in '08, the plants sold quickly as gardeners were glad to find this easy to grow plant in a new color and with a taller habit than 'Arizona Sun'. Looks best in naturalized areas since the foliage is less than perfect.
Charming groundcover for a shady garden. The fragrant, delicate, bright white flowers stand out dramatically against the dark green foliage. The dainty flowers remind me of baby's breath. Spreads quickly and the foliage remains nice through to frost.
Perennial Geraniums are a must have for the perennial gardens. The flowers alone are enough to make this plant worth growing, but the foliage is great too. Geranium Sanguineum 'Vision' has a low-growing, spreading habit with flowers that bloom through the season with foliage that turns red in fall.
Heliopsis 'Summer Sun'
HT:48" SP:36" Upright, Summer-Fall Morning SunSquare 6" $7.99
A beautiful plant with clear, yellow flowers on stiff, multi-branched stems. Excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. Prefers bright, morning-early afternoon sun, otherwise the foliage tends to wilt down through the heat if summer. Matures to a full 36" across as well, so give this plant plenty of room to grow. Planted towards the center of the garden with Delphinium Pacific Giants towards the back, these plants provide summer color after the Delphiniums have finished and a buffer to protect the Delphiniums from strong winds. Top 10 Perennial.
These are not the Daylilies we grew up with. Breeders have improved foliage vigor along with every feature of bloom quality to further enhance these outstanding plants. Few plants provide the texture, structure, and diverse color range that Daylilies can. One of the easiest plants to grow, Daylilies are long-lived and adaptable to a wide range of soil types. Our mix includes a range of colors that work well together and in combination with other perennials in the mixed garden. Allow space for clumps to spread and note contrast in heights so shorter plants don't get lost among taller ones. Top 10 Perennial.
Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro'
HT:15" SP:36" Summer; Square 10" $14.99
Our most popular daylily. This daylily forms large clumps quickly and at only 15" in height, the flowers appear on shorter scapes creating a mass of blooms close to the foliage. The blooms last through summer and are most impressive planted in a hedge form or in mass. Because they spread quickly, plants offered in these larger sized containers can be planted 36-42" apart.
Heuchera 'Melting Fire'
HT:30" (Includes Flower Stems) SP:20" Summer Fullto
Part-Shade; Square 6" $7.99
Mounding plant with ruffled, redish purple leaves with those classic 12" stems of bell-shaped flowers that start as dark red buds opening to creamy white. The dark foliage coloration show up best when planted near contrasting foliage plants including Hostas, Lamium, and other shady spot perennials.
Square 8" $8.99 Hosta
'Regal Splendor' and 'Gold Standard'
Hostas are a wonderful structural addition to any shady garden. Available in a diverse range of heights and foliage coloration, they brighten otherwise dark areas of the landscape.
Remaining Iris include: 'Beverly Sills' and 'Red Hawk'
HT:36" Spreading Rhizomes, Spring Square 5.5" $5.99
Bearded Iris are a traditional favorite in the spring landscape and do best in sandy, well-drained soils. Highly deer-resistant. When planting, leave the top 25-50% of the rhizome exposed above soil level (after watering in). We are also offering two varieties of Siberian Iris this season: 'Butter and Sugar' and 'Contrast in Styles'.
Lamium 'Orchid Frost'
HT:8" Groundcover, Summer Square 6" $7.99
Does well in dry shade; avoid overwatering. Outstanding silver with green edging foliage brightens shady areas. I started this plant in September out in the cold frame and set it directly under the bench. The foliage did not go dormant and requires strict adherence to full shade conditions. Lovely, as shown here, when used as a container garden plant.
Lavender 'Munstead'
HT:24" SP:30" Mounding, Summer Square 3.5" $3.49
Unmatched in the herb garden for fragrance, Lavender is the most popular herb we offer. Sandy soil with excellent drainage is a must for these plants to succeed over winter and into spring. Thrives in rock gardens, with gravel, rather than bark mulch. Best when harvested just before the buds open. Shear spent blooms and stems in late summer. Blooms attract honeybees.
Leucanthemum Shasta Daisies
'Alaska' HT:24" SP:30" Square 4" $3.99; An early variety with single flowers on 24" stems. Shasta Daisies are an easy to grow traditional favorite for summer color.
Asiatic Lilies

Summer, Square 5.5" $5.99
Lupine 'Gallery Mix'
HT:30" SP:24" Late spring - early summer Square 4" $3.99
Flower stocks rise above mounding, palmate foliage. Popular as cut flowers. By mid-summer, I cut back the spent flowers and the foliage if it needs it. Best when planted towards the center or back of the garden surrounded by later blooming, part-shade perennials including Monarda and Dianthus 'First Love'.
Monarda didyma 'Panorama Mix'
HT:36" SP:30" Upright, Mid-Late Summer Square 4" $3.99
Monarda is well-known for attracting hummingbirds into the gardens since their tubular flowers are suited to the bird's feeding habits. The foliage is wonderfully mint scented. Overall, an excellent, long-lived perennial for the part-shade garden.
Square 4" $3.99
Papaver 'Garden Gnome' A much different plant than the Orientale Poppies including smaller, brightly colored blooms that continue through the summer on 6-8" plants that remain compact and look nice all season.
Remaining Peonies include Double White and Sea Shell Pink
HT:30" SP:30" Bushy Habit, Late Spring-Early Summer
Peonies are a long-lived, full sun perennial and a traditional favorite. The beautiful, fragrant flowers can be enjoyed in the gardens and as cut flowers for a late spring bouquet. The foliage stays lush through the summer, then turns to deep shades of burgundy through fall. Prefers amended garden soil. Plant just deep enough to cover the crown by about 2-3 inches and allow 3-4 years to become established in the gardens. Peonies have a symbiotic relationship with ants that I am still trying to respect and even appreciate. Offerings for 2010 include:
Peony 'Duchesse de Nemours'- White; Square 12" $29.99
'Sea Shell' a single flowering pink; Square 8" $14.99 Square 12" $29.99
Phlox paniculata 'Eva Cullum', 'David', 'Laura' and 'Franz Schubert'
HT:30" SP:24" Upright/Bushy, Late Summer Square 6" $7.99
Like Peonies, Phlox are popular, long lived plants for the full sun garden. Provide ample water at the base rather than overhead so flowers don't "shatter" and drop prematurely. We have soaker hoses throughout most of out perennial gardens. Prefers amended soil with good drainage.
Phlox subulata 'Emerald Blue' and Phlox subulata 'Emerald Pink'
6" Groundcover, Spring-Early Summer Square 3.5" $3.49
Groundcover Phlox provides a mass of blooms early in the season and the dense, dark green foliage looks good as it continues to grow through summer. Semi-evergreen through winter this groundcover provides winter interest and is ready with a mass of color through early spring. Easy to grow and lovely at the base of Roses and landscape shrubs. Both the upright and groundcover Phlox are Top 10 Perennials.
Polemonium 'Blue Whirl'
HT:24" SP:18" Upright, Spring-Early Summer Full toPart-Shade; Square 4" $3.99
Clusters of blue flowers rise above the foliage on sturdy, upright stems. The fernlike foliage stays nice through the heat of summer when planted in part-shade. Tolerates full sun when planted in amended soil and ample water is provided. The yellow throat and stamens contrast nicely with the blue petals. More compact than traditional varieties of Jacob's Ladder.
Saponaria (Soapwort)
8" Groundcover, Spring-Early Summer to Square 3.5" $3.49
Groundcover that's perfect in many ways; good foliage and bright pink flowers. Needs ample water if planted in full sun. The seeds are viable, so we shear in late summer after the seeds have set and fallen. Popular as a rock garden plant or at the base of shrubs, vines, and other perennials.
Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue'
HT:14" SP:14" Mounding, Summer-Fall Square 6" $7.99
Scabiosas are an easy to grow, dependable perennial. While their foliage is less than perfect, the blooms are unbeatable for attracting butterflies and bumblebees into the gardens. At just over 12 inches, we plant this beauty towards the front of the garden and close to the deck so we can watch the show. Plant of the Year for 2000.
Groundcover Sedum 'Angelina'; Square 3.5" $3.49
6" Foliage Spring-Frost
Sedum's succulent foliage is perfect for our hot, dry summers. Avoid overwatering: planting in the same watering zone as lawn. Both add distinct foliage texture and color to rock gardens, between pavers, at the garden's edge, and in container gardens. Produce flowers, but are more widely popular for their foliage.
Sempervivum, Hens and Chicks
HT:5" Groundcover Square 4" $3.99
Unusual succulent mix that can be divided and moved to other xeric gardens once the plants become established. Grown primarily for their foliage the plants are a great choice for rock gardens and shallow container gardens.
Veronica 'Royal Candles'
HT:12" SP:12" Compact/Upright Late Spring-Summer Square 4" $3.99
At just 12" tall, this perennial shows best towards the front of the garden. The foliage is very compact and the abundant spikes stay tight through summer. Very hardy, with long lasting blooms that are lovely as filler in table bouquets and container gardens.
