Although we are not a mail order greenhouse, we know that many experienced, new to the area, and just getting started gardeners like to plan ahead and come out with a wish list of possibilities in hand. Our Availability List Pages provide pictures along with cultural information about the plants we plan to offer. We will continue to offer Full Tray Discounts and a Weekly Special through the 2012 season.
We offer perennials for
zones 3-4 including "tried and true perennials" that I have grown in my gardens along with some new cultivars that I wanted to try.
I watch for overall garden performance, including bloom and foliage through the changing seasons.
When considering perennials for gardens that have a mix of trees, shrubs, and perennials, note the
Full Sun, Part-Shade, Full Shade, and Water-Wise symbols so plants with the same requirements can be grouped together.
It is my experience that plants that thrive in full sun are often water-wise, preferring xeric landscapes, and will do poorly when planted in shady areas and/or are overwatered. Likewise, perennials for part-full shade do best when planted in amended soils that hold water (stay cooler) and are topdressed with mulch.
Most labels offered with plants use the phrase "keep soil evenly moist". My best advice when asked how often and how much to water individual plants, plants in gardens, and groups in container gardens is the same; "keep soil (or potting mix) evenly moist". This will allow gardeners to consider only replacing water that is lost/used between waterings.
Our most efficient irrigation systems are soaker hoses and drip systems that provide water to the roots where it's needed. The lawn areas are on popup sprayers scheduled to run at two twenty-minute cycles every three days through the heat of summer. To obtain water rights, we were required to install a water meter. Our water usage has remained at a consistent 26,000 gallons per month even through July and August, our two driest and hottest months. This is to water 5,000 sq. ft. of lawn, hundreds of trees and large shrubs, 12 perennial gardens, the greenhouse and nursery, along with the water used in our home. We offer this as a guideline for people who may be considering the use of efficient systems available to save time, money, and resources.
A plant's growth is dependent on its genetic characteristics, cultural practices, and the climate. The description includes information about the plant's mature height (HT) and spread (SP) so that the shorter plants don't get lost amongst taller varieties and so gardeners have spacing information. We have described plants as: Upright; the plant will be taller than it is wide, Mounding; the plant will be as wide, or slightly wider, than it is tall, Sprawling; spreading outward from one or more basal stems, or as a Groundcover; ...spreading to infinity and beyond.
After the height and spread, you'll find the plant's regional bloom time so gardeners in this area will have continuous color throughout the changing seasons.
Garden Designs have moved from foundation to curb since they are often viewed from inside the home. The mixed garden that includes shrubs, perennials, and annuals provides a screen from roadways and allows us to enjoy the gardens from inside looking out as well as from a deck or patio. Garden walls are easy to install and give homeowners a sense of privacy.

Aquilegia 'Winky Red w/White'
HT:20" SP:12" Upright, Spring-Early Summer Square 4" $3.99
Columbines are among the easiest of perennials to grow with spring blooms and attractive foliage through summer when grown in part-shade. 'Winky' has been a personal favorite over the past few years with its compact habit and charming fully double flowers. Because the plant tops out at 20 inches, it does best toward the front of the garden. The flowers attract butterflies and ladybugs; avoid pesticides so ladybugs can thrive and keep aphids in check.
Ladybugs (eggs to larvae) thrive in healthy gardens. You can buy them and release them, but it's the flowers that naturally induce, sustain, and keep them in the gardens.
Artemisia Silver Mound
HT:12" SP:12" Mounding Habit, Blooms Late Summer Square 4" $3.99
Finely textured silver leaves are soft to the touch. Habit can be kept in a compact mound by trimming back blooms as they appear. Xeric plant that thrives a sandy soils with soil level, drip irrigation rather than overhead sprinklers.
Baptisia australis
HT:36" SP:36" Upright, Spring Square 6" Pot $8.49
A distinctive perennial with showy indigo-blue flowers carried on tapering spikes up to 1' long held just above the dense, bushy mounds of soft blue-green foliage. The blooms appear from mid-late spring, followed by 2-3 in. long, black seed pods which can be dried for use in arrangements.
Baptisia australis is native to the prairies of North America, so it is easy to grow and will thrive with little maintenance. Baptisia works well in the mixed garden, alone as a specimen planting, or in drifts weaving through the landscape with other tall, upright perennials that thrive in full sun. Plant of the Year for 2010.
Campanula persicifolia
HT:30" SP:30", Summer Square 6" Pot $8.49
Dense, matted foliage stays low while the bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage on wiry stocks. True blue color is lovely with white Campanula or other white flowered perennials like Shasta Daisies. As is the case with many upright perennials on tall stems, the best watering system includes a drip system like soaker hoses that keep water off the blooms so they don't flop over.
Campanula 'Blue Waterfall'
Groundcover with cascading blue flowers all season to
Square 4" Pot $3.99
This charming Campanula does well in full sun when provided with frequent watering. We use the plants for both, in ground, and container gardens. Shearing spent flowers (deadheading) will promote continuous blooms through spring, summer, and into fall.
Caryopteris 'Blue Mist'
Square 6" $14.99 Rounded Habit Blooms Late Summer-Frost
Compact shrub for container gardening and where a small shrub is needed for the mixed garden. We prune to green in late spring since the blue flowers appear on late summer growth, like Pervoskia and other "woody" perennials. Highly deer-resistant and a honeybee magnet; a characteristic to consider if you're allergic or (cringe) just don't like honeybees.
Centranthus coccineus
HT:30" SP:30" Upright, Summer Square 4" Pot $3.99
An outstanding plant for our climate since the plants thrive through hot, dry summers and -30 degree winters. Prefers full sun, sandy soil, and drip irrigation at the soil level rather than overhead watering. Centranthus blooms attract butterflies and will bloom again later if deadheaded; otherwise, the spent blooms will drop viable seeds. Centranthus has been a personal favorite since it is so easy to grow.
Cerastium tomentosum 'Snow In Summer'
6" Silver Foliage Groundcover, Summer Square 3.5" $3.49
Easy to grow groundcover for hot, sunny areas. By far our most aggressive groundcover and our most popular. Spreads quickly and the foliage remains through the winter months and into spring preventing annual weeds from germinating. I shear the plant to about two inches every fall and use scissors to keep the mat of foliage from spreading into areas I don't need it. Good plant for sloped, full sun areas since it holds the soil in place. Viable seeds in the spent blooms can be used to start plants in other areas.
Large Flowering Clematis Square 6" $14.99
'Barbara Jackman'; Shown on right
'Jackmanii Supurba'; Dark purple
'Little Duckling'; Pink-White Bi-color
'Niobe'; Shown on left
'Ruutel'; Magenta
'Pink Fantasy'
'Perle D Azure'; Light Purple
'Mrs. Chomondeley'; Light purple
The large, single flowering Clematis we offer are hardy to this area. A reliable vine when given the right growing conditions. Plant in well-drained, amended soil with the foliage in full sun and the roots shaded by groundcovers or mulch. Provide ample water and regular fertilizing. Buds often break late, so we suggest waiting until late spring before pruning the vine to dieback. Clematis typically take 3-5 years to mature and only require pruning to remove spent growth.
Coreopsis verticillata 'Zagreb'
HT:15" SP:15" Mounding, Late Summer Square 6" Pot $8.49
Compact and bushy with an overall airy appearance with its fine, needle-like foliage on upright stems. Reliable perennial in our gardens for over a decade. Quarter-sized, bright yellow flowers appear into fall.
Delphinium Magic Fountains 'Sky Blue w/White Eye'
HT:36" SP:18" Upright, Early Summer Square 4" $3.99
A shorter, more compact variety than we have offered in the past. At 3 feet, the flower stocks fare better through our windy spring weather. Planted towards the center of the garden and surrounded by other mid-height perennials, the flower stocks will be buffered from strong winds. Excellent as a cut flower since it lasts for several weeks in a vase. Delphiniums are short-lived, so I plant every 2-3 years.
Dianthus 'First Love'
24" Upright; Spring-Summer-Fall to Square 4" Pot $3.99
Dianthus 'First Love' is fragrant and a butterfly magnet. I have planted this beauty both, in ground and in container gardens. Our container gardens are often placed where we can sit comfortably, enjoy the plant's fragrance, and watch the butterflies as they settle and feed on the blooms.
Dianthus 'Firewitch'
8" Silver Foliage, Mounding Habit, Spring-Fall Square 3.5" $3.49
Forms tufts of blue-green foliage that spread quickly and stays nice through the season. Charming flowers are wonderfully fragrant, bloom in mass, attract butterflies, and will continue to bloom through 2-3 cycles if sheared after each bloom cycle. Plant of the Year for 2006.
Dicentra spectabilis
HT:30" SP:36" Old-fashioned Bleeding Hearts, Spring to Square 6" $8.49
Classic native perennial that forms a large mass of fresh green leaves topped with arching sprays of rose colored flowers through spring. One of the first perennials in the garden to bloom. We set a big pot or 5 gallon bucket over the plant to protect it if heavy snow is in the forecast. Foliage will go dormant through the heat of summer , but continue to keep the roots well-watered. Best when planted towards the center of the garden surrounded by other tall perennials that bloom later in the season like Hosta or Lupine. On a cautionary note, Dicentra is poisonous, so take care when planing and/or pruning.
Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' HT:30" and 'Prairie Splendor' HT:24"; Upright, Late Summer Magnus; 6" $8.49 Praire Splendor; 4" $3.99
Coneflowers are slow growing but reliable. Placed towards the center rather than the back of the garden, Echinacea provides late season color in the landscape. Native to the Americas, Echinacea attracts butterflies and is an important addition to the xeric, full sun perennial garden. We suggest planting with Rudbeckias, Gaillardias, and other late season daisies. 'Prairie Splendor' is a more compact variety, but equally hardy, and blooms a full two weeks before 'Magnus'. 'Magnus' is the PPA Award Winner for 1998.
Festuca glauca
8" Ornamental Grass, Summer Square 4" $3.99
Soft, powdery blue foliage forms a rounded clump that keeps its color through winter. Showy seed stalks rise well above the foliage to provide late summer through winter interest. Chosen for both its showy color and its water-wise characteristics. Durable, long-lived, and easy-to-grow variety of ornamental grass; bunching habit makes it non-invasive.
Gaillardia 'Mesa Bicolor' and 'Mesa Yellow'
HT:12" SP:12"; Mounding Habit
Bloom Summer-Fall, Square 4" $3.99
Gaillardias have a long bloom time that can be further extended with deadheading. Gaillardias attract bees and butterflies so a nice companion planting with Catmints, Salvia, and other perennials that thrive in full sun.
Gaillardia 'Arizona Red Shades' and 'Arizona Apricot'
HT:12" SP:12"; Mounding Habit
Bloom Summer-Fall, Square 4" $3.99
Gaillardias will fail in overwatered landscapes in soils that do not provide the drainage required by these and other xeric plants. Prefer gravel or finely chopped bark as a mulch.
Geranium 'Wargrave Pink' 14", 'Brookside' 20", and 'Patricia' 30" Mounding Habit; Summer-Fall Square 5.5" Pot $7.99
Perennial Geraniums are a must have for full sun perennial gardens. The flowers alone are enough to make this plant worth growing, but the foliage is great too. Plants bloom through the season with shearing between bloom cycles. Easy to grow and adaptable to a wide range of soil types. The foliage turns red into fall. 'Brookside' has a vigorous sprawling habit so allow plenty of room for the plant to spread so it doesn't overwhelm shorter varieties growing nearby. These perennial Geraniums are non-invasive, unlike their unruly cousin, 'Johnson's Blue' .
Heliopsis 'Summer Sun'
HT:48" SP:36" Upright, Late Summer-Fall toSquare 4" $3.99
A beautiful plant with clear, yellow flowers on stiff, multi-branched stems. Excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. Prefers bright, morning-early afternoon sun, otherwise the foliage may wilt down through our summer heat. Matures to a full 36" across as well, so give this plant plenty of room to grow. Planted towards the back-center of the garden, easily fills in as cover for plants like Orientale Poppies and Dicentra that bloom early then need trimming back as the foliage fades.
Hemerocallis (Daylily) Full Sun Perennials; Square 6" $8.49
and Square 8" $9.99 depending upon variety
These are not the Daylilies we grew up with. Breeders have improved overall vigor along with every feature of bloom quality to further enhance these outstanding plants. Few plants provide the texture, structure, and diverse color range that Daylilies can. One of the easiest plants to grow, Daylilies are long-lived and adaptable to a wide range of soil types.
Our mix includes a range of colors that work well together and in combination with other perennials in the mixed garden. Though these new varieties are less aggressive than older varieties and will not require dividing until they have been in the gardens for many years, do allow space for clumps to spread.
Note the contrast in heights when making your selections so shorter plants don't get lost among taller ones. Drifts of Hemerocallis will provide color through early-summer and well into fall. Though deer may nibble on the blooms, the foliage will remain unscathed.
As with most perennials, the blooms and foliage will do best when drip irrigation is provided at soil level where it's needed rather than from overhead sprayers.
'Bela Lugosi'
'Hush Little Baby'
'Barbara Mitchell'
'Purple de Oro'
'Pardon Me'
Highly deer-resistant Perennial Herbs this season for either container gardening or in the landscape include:
Mentha "Spearmint" (which can be invasive in smaller gardens) and Oregano. We planted these vertical herb gardens last season using 9 plants; 3 Spearmint, 3 Lemon Thyme, and 3 Lemon Balm. The container set on the deck all summer (harvested frequently) and was over-wintered in the southern greenhouse.
Cold hardy annuals: Thymus citriodorus "Lemon Thyme" and Rosemary. These two are almost, but not quite, hardy enough to be perennials, so best when over-wintered in a container indoors. Both are full sun plants and will only do well in a warm, sunny window setting.
Unmatched in the herb garden for fragrance, Lavender is the most popular herb we offer. Sandy soil with excellent drainage is a must for these plants to succeed over winter and into spring. Thrives in rock gardens, with gravel, rather than bark mulch. Best when harvested just before the buds open. Shear spent blooms and stems in late summer. Highly deer-resistant and the blooms attract honeybees.
'Wide Brim'; 16", 'Twilight'; 22", 'Crowned Imperial';36" Square 8" Pot $9.99
Hostas are a wonderful structural addition to any shady garden.
Available in a diverse range of heights and foliage coloration, they brighten otherwise shady areas of the landscape. Though best in full shade, we have found that Hostas will tolerate part-shade conditions when provided with ample water and planted in amended soils. A showy plant with or without the flowers we enjoy them on the deck in container gardens and planted in the gardens every season.
'Autumn Circus'
'Gratefull Red' 'Harvest of Memories'
Square 6" Pot $8.49
Bearded Iris are a traditional favorite in the spring landscape since their showy flowers add a vertical element to the garden and also last for several days as a cut flower in a vase . Highly deer-resistant. We're offering two new varieties this season that are shorter and more compact; 'Absolute Joy' and 'Circus Dragon' topping out between 12"-18" tall. Because of their height, these beauties will do best planted towards the center or front of the garden.
Iris prefer to planted with the top 25-50% of the rhizome exposed above soil level (after watering in). Plants do best in sandy, well-drained soils.
'Indigo Seas'
'Beverly Sills'
'Absolute Joy'
Leucanthemum; Shasta Daisies Mid-Summer
We have three Shastas this season: 'Alaska' HT:24" SP:30"; 4" Pot $3.99 An early variety with single flowers on 24" stems. 'Snow Cap' HT:12" SP:15"; 6" Pot $8.49 Compact, mounding habit. Prolific bloomer. 'Becky' HT:36" 40"; 6" Pot $8.49 Multi-branching habit on strong stems.
'Becky' is the PPA Plant of the Year for 2003.
Liatris spicata 'Kobold'
HT:36" SP:20" Upright, Mid-Late Summer Square 5.5" $7.99
Bright lavender pink flowers open on wands from top to bottom down to a 10" stem with short, narrow leaves; like a bottlebrush. Excellent as a cut flower. Prefers soils with good drainage so avoid planting in low areas where roots stay wet through early spring. Look best planted in close groups that form a mass. Roots resemble bulblets (corymbs) and are best divided after mature plants form a large clump. Blooms attract butterflies into the gardens.
Pixy Orange
Lilium Asiatic Lily
HT:20" SP:18" (Bulb) Upright, Summer
Square 6" $8.49
Asiatic lilies are popular since they are easy to grow and reliable as bulbs that multiply in the gardens without sacrificing bloom size. Medium height for an Asiatic, so a nice addition to the central section of the mixed garden. Remove spent flowers, but leave the stalk through summer to feed the bulbs. Also available in Bright Pixy, a deep shade of yellow.
Pixy Pink
HT:24" SP:4'
#2 Container $32.00
Lonicera Honeysuckle 'Honeybush'
Groundcover form of a popular climbing vine. Plant where the sprays of highly fragrant flowers can be enjoyed through summer. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds; fun to watch as they as they lite from bloom to bloom. Woody perennial that keeps its vines through the winter so it spreads quickly. At 24 inches, the vines would spread over the top of shorter perennials, but do well planted a the base of tall shrubs.
Lupine 'Gallery Red'
HT:30" SP:24" Late spring - early summer Square 4" $3.99
Flower stocks rise above mounding, palmate foliage. By mid-summer, I cut back the spent flowers and the foliage if it needs it. Best when planted towards the center or back of the garden surrounded by later blooming, part-shade perennials including Monarda.
Monarda didyma 'Red Shades'
HT:36" SP:30" Upright, Mid-Late Summer 4" Pot $3.99
Monarda is well-known for attracting hummingbirds into the gardens since their tubular flowers are suited to the bird's feeding habits. The foliage is wonderfully mint scented. Overall, an excellent, long-lived perennial for the part-shade garden.
Nepeta (Catmint) 'Walker's Low'
HT:24" Vigorous spreader, Spring-Fall Square 6" $8.49
Foliage is lightly scented and the blooms start early then finish late after a mid-summer shearing. The blooms attract honeybees and bumblebees all summer; a characteristic to consider if you're allergic or (cringe) just don't like honeybees. Nepeta is a personal favorite because it's so easy to grow.
Plant of the Year for 2007.
We also have Nepeta mussinii, Square 3.5" $3.49 A groundcover form of this all summer blooming plant. The seeds of Nepeta mussinii are viable and while the individual plant spreads quickly, it's the seedlings that are known for popping up here, there, and everywhere. Shear this plant after the first flush of flowers has finished to enjoy a second round of flowers. Nepetas are highly deer-resistant.
Oenothera missouriensis HT:12" SP:30" Sprawling Habit, Mid-Late Summer Square 3.5" $3.49
This Oenothera has bright yellow flowers that are a full 3 inches accross. Blooms mid-late summer on sprawling stems giving the plant a groundcover appearance. Unusual 2-3 inch seed pods, with viable seeds, develop through late fall.
'Bolero' and 'Burning Heart' HT:30" Blooms Through Early Spring; Square 5.5" $7.99 Oriental Poppies are unique with their large, intensely bright, papery blooms measuring a full 4-5 inches across. Like many perennials that have large flowers, these plants prefer to be watered at soil level using soaker hoses or other type of drip system so the foliage and flowers stay dry and don't drop their petals. Oriental Poppies are beautiful as cut flowers. I singe the bottom of the stem with a lighter and the blooms hold up for weeks. We plant Oriental Poppies towards the center of the garden and cut them back in later in summer as their foliage begins to die back.
Penstemon xmexicali 'Red Rocks'
and 'Pikes Peak' HT:15" SP:12" Early-Late Summer 4" Pot $3.99
Penstemons are well known for attracting hummingbirds and bees into the gardens. The upright habit and long bloom time allows them to fit nicely into the xeric landscape. Nice companions for Nepeta and other full sun perennials.

HT:30" SP:30" Bushy Habit, Late Spring-Early Summer
Available this season in a Square 8" Pot @ $14.99
Peonies are a long-lived, full sun perennial and a traditional favorite. The beautiful, fragrant flowers can be enjoyed in the gardens and as cut flowers for a late spring bouquet. The foliage stays lush through the summer, then turns to deep shades of burgundy through fall. Prefers amended garden soil. Plant just deep enough to cover the crown by about 2-3 inches and allow 3-4 years to become established.
Perovskia atriplicifolia Russian Sage
HT:36" SP:30" Late Summer-Fall Square 6" $8.49 and Square 8" $14.99
Masses of small flowers form on multi-branched, aromatic stems from August-frost. Highly deer-resistant and honeybee magnet through fall. Prefers xeric landscape conditions so avoid waterlogged soil in winter. Pervoskia, like Caryopteris, forms woody branches through the summer months and then flowers late in the season. We prune these woody perennials back to green in late spring; this is in contrast to herbaceous perennials that are pruned to ground level in the fall. PPA Plant of the Year for 1995.
'Laura', 'Franz Schubert', 'Eva Cullum' and 'David' HT:36" SP:24"; Upright, Late Summer Square 6" $8.49 and 8" $9.99 Depending upon variety
Phlox are popular, long lived plants for the full sun to part-shade garden. Prefer amended soils and ample water at the base rather than overhead so flowers don't "shatter" and drop prematurely. We use soaker hoses/drip irrigation throughout most of out perennial gardens. The flowers are highly fragrant and make elegant bouquets; we singe the base of the stem so the flowers last. 'David' is the PPA Plant of the Year for 2002.
Potentilla 'Light My Fire' HT:12" SP:14" Mounding Habit, Mid-Late Summer Square 5.5" $7.99
This Potententilla is a new offering for us this year. We have had good luck with other Potentillas, but were intrigued but the color shown in this bi-color variety. Cousin to the shrubby Potentilla (Cinquefoil) 'Goldfinger' being offered this season, this perennial will be pruned back to just about soil level this fall since the foliage goes dormant through winter.
Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm'
HT:24" SP:20", Upright habit, Late Summer-Fall
Square 6" $8.49
Hardy Rudbeckia provides a profusion of flowers on sturdy, multi-branching stems. Good as a cut flower and a dependable perennial on its own in mass/drifts or in the mixed garden. Compact plant so it shows best when planted in the front-mid section of the garden. As fall shifts to early winter, cones produce seeds that attract birds. Plant of the Year for 1999.
Salvia nemorosa 'May Night'
HT:24" SP:15" Early-Late Summer Square 6" $8.49
Like most perennial Salvias, 'May Night' has an upright habit with sturdy stocks/spikes of flowers through late spring-early summer. Intense shade of purple that stands out in full sun. Highly deer-resistant so we plant it in front of "less resistant" perennials. I prune the spent flowers stocks towards the end of July leaving the foliage untill early winter. 'Maynight' is the PPA Plant of the Year for 1997.
Salvia nemerosa 'Marcus' HT:8" SP:12", Early-Mid Summer Square 6" $8.49
A dwarf, compact variety of a popular Salvia. At only 8 inches tall, the plant looks best along border edges. As with 'Maynight', Salvia 'Marcus' is also highly deer-resistant.
Saponaria (Soapwort)
8" Groundcover, Spring-Early Summer to Square 3.5" $3.49
Groundcover that's perfect in many ways; full, compact foliage and a mass of bright pink flowers. Provide ample water if planted in full sun. Like Cerastium, the seeds are viable, so we shear in late summer after the seeds have set and fallen. Popular as a rock garden plant or at the base of shrubs, vines, and other perennials. Lovely when planted along the garden border to soften hard edges and spill over garden walls or raised beds.
Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue'
HT:14" SP:14" Mounding, Summer-Fall Square 6" $8.49
Scabiosas are an easy-to-grow, dependable perennial. While their foliage is less than perfect, the blooms are unbeatable for attracting butterflies and bumblebees into the gardens. At just over 12 inches, we plant this beauty towards the front of the garden and close to the deck so we can watch the show. Plant of the Year for 2000.
Sedum 'Autumn Joy'
HT:24" SP:20" Upright habit, Late Summer-Fall Square 5.5" $7.99
Upright succulent with bluish-green leaves with serrated edges. Unbranched stems carry the salmon pink flowers through fall. 'Autumn Joy' is an easy to grow succulent that adds late-season color to the full sun, xeric garden. Once established, clumps can be easily divided and planted through late fall after cutting back.
'Blaze of Fulda' and Sedum 'Angelina' Groundcovers, Foliage Spring-Frost, Square 3.5" $3.49
Sedum's succulent foliage is perfect for our hot, dry summers. Prefer xeric conditions, so avoid overwatering. Both add distinct foliage texture and color to rock gardens, between pavers, at the garden's edge, and in container gardens. Foliage color intensifies with the onset of fall and through winter. Both produce flowers, but are more widely popular for their foliage. Easy to grow and spreads quickly.
Strawberries 'Cavendish'
HT:5" Groundcover Available 5/4/12
Chosen for their hardiness and flavor. Brought in as bareroot plants, they will be available in 5" pulp pots @$3.99. Straw mulch works best at keeping the fruit up and off the soil so it stays clean and away from slugs.
Square 3.5" $3.49
Thymus serpyllum Mother of Thyme and Woolly Thyme bloom later in the season. Mother of Thyme has a mounding habit and grows to about 4" with viable seeds that spread "little ones" throughout the landscape. I think that's why it's called Mother of Thyme. Woolly Thyme is shorter at just 1/2". Both are well-known for their fragrant foliage so they make great plants for between pavers since they release their wonderful fragrance with light foot traffic. Like many herbs, Thyme attracts honeybees (pollinators) making them a popular choice for planting around the vegetable garden.
Tradescantia 'Pink Chablis'' HT:18" Sprawling Habit, Mid-Summer to Square 5.5" $7.99
Tradescantia form a clumping mass of upright stems with long leaves and pretty pink flowers with ruffled edges. The plants are easy to grow and spread quickly. Beautiful at the base of trees and shrubs with their sprawling habit and charming flowers that stand out even from a distance.
Square 6" $8.49 Veronica 'Sunny Border Blue'
HT:24" SP:24" Upright Habit, Late Summer-Fall
Sharing many of the same characteristics as Salvia, this Veronica blooms later in the season and with flowers that are a noteably lighter shade of blue. Plant of the Year for 1993.
Veronica 'Royal Candles'
HT:12" SP:12" Compact/Upright, Late Spring-Summer
Square 4" Pot $3.99
At just 12" tall this perennial shows best towards the front of the garden. The foliage is very compact and the abundant spikes of cobalt blue flowers stay tight through summer. Very hardy, with long lasting blooms that are lovely in container gardens and as cut flowers.
Verronica liwanensis
HT:1/2" Groundcover; Early Spring, Square 3.5" $3.49
Plant in full sun. Cobalt blue flowers cover the dense mat of glossy, oval leaves that look nice through the summer months and remain evergreen through winter. The flowers last only a few weeks, but are outstanding in color and a great addition to soften garden edges and for use between pavers since they can tolerate light foot traffic.
