Welcome to our website!
The greenhouse and nursery are open for the season.
Hours are: 9-6 Tuesday-Saturday and 10-3 Sunday and Monday.

Although we are not a mail order greenhouse, we know that many experienced, new to the area, and just getting started gardeners like to plan ahead and come out with a list of possibilities in hand. Our Availability List Pages provide pictures and cultural information so gardeners can familiarize themselves with the shrubs, perennials, and annuals we offer and will be updated through the season. Availability is ultimately dependent upon crop success.

We offer perennials for zones 3-4 with a 80/20 mix; 80% are "tried and true perennials" that I have grown in my gardens and have been happy with the results, and 20% are cultivars of proven plants that are available in a new color or foliage variation that we want to try.
Unfortunately, there is no standardization in the industry, so you may notice the same variety listed in one catalog as a zone 3, and in another as zone 4, or even 5. That's why I think it is important to trial the plants here in our display gardens. We watch for overall garden performance including bloom and foliage through the changing seasons.
Indicates a new offering for us.
When considering perennials for gardens that have a mix of trees, shrubs, and perennials, note the Full Sun, Part-Shade, Full Shade, and Water-Wise symbols so plants with the same requirements can be grouped together; a key element to water wise gardening and landscape success.

Full Sun Part-Shade Full ShadeWater-Wise
It is my experience that plants that thrive in full sun are also water-wise and will do poorly when planted in shady areas and/or are overwatered. Likewise, perennials for part-full shade do best when planted in amended soils that hold water and are topdressed with a layer of organic mulch. Part shade includes filtered, rather than direct light, or morning sun, rather than the hot, afternoon sun. Regardless of their water or light requirements, plants will perform poorly in poor soil.
More on soils and planting tips Adding Amendments

The plant's mature height information is provided so that the shorter plants don't get lost amongst taller varieties. Except with groundcovers, a plant's width/spread/spacing is usually the same as its height. After the height and bloom color, you'll find the plant's regional bloom time for designs that provide all season color.

After the Picture Gallery, there is a Select and Print section that lists the plants by height, light requirement, and includes the price.
Towards the end of this page are a few Garden Designs that gardeners can use to select perennials and shrubs. The examples include various garden shapes with notes on the numbers of plants needed to fill the area.

Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' Foliage and In Bloom
4" Groundcover; Spring
Vigorous plant that quickly forms a dense mat as runners root. The beautiful foliage looks great through the summer months and the burgundy coloration intensifies through fall and remains through winter. Prefers part-full shade through the heat of summer.

Aquilegia 'Music' Blue w/White
24" Bi-Color; Spring
Columbines are among the easiest of perennials to grow with spring blooms and attractive foliage throughout the season when grown in afternoon shade. The flowers attract butterflies and ladybugs. Avoid pesticides so ladybugs have an opportunity to keep aphids in check.

Ladybug eggs to larvae; will thrive in healthy gardens.
For 2008, we will offer Aquilegia 'Winky Mix' with semidouble, bicolored flowers in red, blue, purple, and rose with white centers; blooms through early-mid spring. Grows to 18" with a mounding habit.

Campanula persicifolia 'Telham Beauty'

30" Blue; Summer
Dense, matted foliage with bell-shaped flowers on wiry stocks that rise above the foliage. True blue and good companion plants with Delphiniums since they bloom at the same time with colors in the same hues.

Campanula 'Blue Waterfall' 6" Groundcover; Summer
Charming blue blooms on cascading foliage. Prefers part shade and well drained soil. Beautiful as a groundcover and in container gardens.

Centranthus coccineus
30" Pinkish Red; Summer
An outstanding plant for the xeric landscape. Our plants have thrived through hot, dry summers and -30 degree winters. The plants do best planted in full sun, lean-sandy soils, and it is important to avoid overwatering. Centranthus blooms attract butterflies through the summer, will bloom again later if deadheaded, and reseeds freely.

Cerastium tomentosum 'Silver Carpet'
6" Silver Groundcover; Summer
Aggressive, easy to grow groundcover for hot, sunny areas. Quickly forms a dense mat of silver foliage. Will choke out weeds or anything else that gets close to it. Good plant for sloped, full sun areas.
For 2008, we will also offer Cerastium alpinum a slightly shorter, more compact variety than tomentosum, but with shared characteristics.

Large Flowering Clematis
6' - 8' Vine; Summer
The large, single flowered Clematis we offer are hardy to this area. A reliable vine when given the right growing conditions. Plant in well drained, amended soil with the foliage in full sun and the roots shaded by groundcovers or mulch. Provide ample water and prune to dieback in late spring. Buds often break late, so we suggest waiting until late spring before pruning. Clematis take 3-5 years to mature.
Last August, I pruned two large clematis plants down to 4 inches from ground level. I did this because so many dead vines were intermixed with live vines and there was no other way to get to them. Fortunately, the plants had grown back to a full 6' by the end of October.

Varieties for '08 Include:
Ramona, Blue
Niobe, Burgundy
Will Goodwin, Blue
Jackmanii Supurba, Purple
Silver Moon, Silver-Mauve
Sunset, Red
Anna Louise, Pink bicolor

Smaller flowering varieties on taller, vigorous vines
Clematis Viticella Abundance, 2-3" bloom
Clematis paniculata Sweet Autumn, Delicate, Fragrant, White
Clematis tangutica, Small, Yellow, Bell-shaped flowers

Clematis Sweet Autumn, shown here on the left, and Clematis tangutica on the right, have been growing for about 8 years and have not been pruned. Both are excellent as garden backdrops and reduce the intrusion of the adjacent roadway and neighboring houses.

Coreopsis 'Sunfire' and 'Zagreb'
14" Yellow; Summer
Coreopsis have long been a favorite of mine with their sunny yellow colors and easy to grow habit. Cousin to the popular 'Early Sunrise' Coreopsis 'Sunfire' blooms throught summer and does best with deadheading. 'Zagreb' blooms late summer into fall with a full, mounding habit.

Delphinium Magic Fountains Series
24" Dark Blue and Light Blue; Summer
The flower spikes rise above the foliage on this dwarf series that is well-suited to our windy area. The blooms last a full two weeks in a vase and the two shades of blue are outstanding. Our other Delphinium, also new for us, is from the Summer Series, 'Summer Morning', at 12", with rosy-pink, multibranched flower spikes that bloom from mid-late summer. Delphiniums are short-lived so I plant every 2-3 years.

Dianthus 'First Love'
15" Shades of Pink; Spring-Summer-Fall
Tall variety, lovely between other medium height perennials and in container gardens. Dianthus have long lasting, fragrant blooms that attract butterflies through summer and into fall.

Dianthus 'Firewitch'
6" Groundcover; Spring-Early Summer
Mounding habit with blue-green foliage that remains through the season. The flowers are an intense color and look best when planted in mass.
Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year for 2006.

Echinacea purpurea 'Ruby Star' and 'White Swan'
30" Daisy flowers with golden cone; Late Summer
Coneflowers are slow growing but reliable. Long lasting as a cut flower and a welcome addition to the late summer-fall garden. Attracts butterflies and its bright, central cone makes it unique.

Matteuccia struthiopteris
36" Ostrich Fern
Find a shady spot that includes amended soils and ample water for these hardy ferns and enjoy the delicate fronds as they unfurl in early spring.

Gaillardia 'Arizona Sun' and 'Burgundy'
12" Red w/Yellow and 30" Red; Early-Late Summer Gaillardias offer a long bloom time and provide a wonderful addition to any naturalized, sunny garden. Both attract butterflies and bees through the summer and into fall. Like Coreopsis, Gaillardias do best with deadheading to encourage new blooms and will reseed freely.

Galium odoratum 'Sweet Woodruff'

6" Bright White Flowers
This is a wonderful groundcover for a shady garden. The fragrant, delicate white flowers stand out dramatically against the dark green foliage. Spreads quickly when shade and ample water are provided.

Geranium 'Rozanne' and Geranium 'Vision'
'Rozanne' 14"; Summer
'Vision' 10"; Groundcover and 'Johnson's Blue' 18"; Mounding
Perennial Geraniums are a must have for the perennial gardens. The flowers alone are enough to make this plant worth growing, but the foliage is great too. Prune/shear back in late summer for rebloom and fall foliage in September. 'Johnson's Blue' seeds are viable and the plant will spread quickly if allowed to go to seed; I use a tarp when pruning.

Gypsophila repens 'Rosea'
4" Groundcover; Summer
Hardy groundcover with delicate, pale pink flowers. Thrives in hot, sunny, well drained locations; avoid overwatering. Perfect for edging, between pavers, and rock gardens with gravel, rather than bark, mulch.

Helenium 'Mardi Gras'
30" Yellow w/Red; Late Summer-Fall
Once established, this unusual perennial is a welcome addition to the fall garden. The flowers are a blend of reds, yellows, and orange, with a complement of chocolate brown centers.

Heliopsis 'Summer Sun'
48" Summer-Fall
A beautiful plant with clear, yellow flowers on stiff, multibranched stems. Excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. Prefers bright, morning sun.

'Stella De Oro', 'Country Melody', and Strutter's Ball
Hemerocallis (Daylilies)
Few plants provide the texture, structure, and diverse color range that Hemerocallis can. One of the easiest plants to grow, Daylilies are long-lived and adaptable to a wide range of soil types. Our mix includes a range of hues that work well together and in combination with other large plantings in the mixed garden. Prefer space to allow clumps to form.
Other Varieties for '08 include:
'Ed Murray' 30" - Red
'Going Bananas' 20" - Yellow
'Jolyene Nichole' 14" - Pink
'Prairie Wildfire' 22" - Red

Heuchera 'Silver Lode'
12" Purple foliage, white flowers on wiry stems; Summer
Heuchera offer excellent foliage coloration that shows up best when planted with contrasting foliage plants. Excellent companion planting with Hostas, Ferns, and other shady spot perennials.
We also have Heuchera 'Green Spice' which has green leaves with a silver overlay and beet-red veins. Both can be used in container gardens.

'Paul's Glory' , 'Regal Splendor', and 'Wide Brim'
Hostas are a wonderful structural addition to shady areas of the landscape. Their foliage brightens any shady garden created by a full canopy of established trees or beneath trimmed pines.

Iris 'Variegata'
Bearded Iris are a traditional favorite in the spring landscape and do best in sandy, well drained soils. Highly deer resistant, Iris have found a home in our gardens since deer move freely through the landscape foraging, but passing over both the foliage and blooms. Early bloomers, so I often bring them inside for spring bouquets.
Other offerings for '08 include:
'American Classic'; Purple and white bicolor
'Painted Clouds'; Shades of pink
'Red at Night'; Red
'Swingtown'; Deep Purple-Red

Lavender 'Munstead'
24" Fragrant Gray/Green Foliage; Summer
Unmatched in the herb garden for fragrance. Harvest the flowers just before they open, dry on the stems in a cool, shady place, and use wherever their wonderful scent can be enjoyed. Prefers sandy soil with good drainage or rock garden with gravel, rather than bark, mulch.

Leucanthemum (Shasta Daisy)
'Becky' 36" and 'Snow Cap' 12"; Summer
A popular choice for any sunny perennial garden. 'Becky' is my favorite tall Shasta Daisy with its strong multibloom stems and large, long lasting, clear white flowers. PPA Plant of the Year for 2003.
For the front of the garden, 'Snowcap' provides a compact mound of clear white blooms. Great with Coreopsis, Gaillardias, and Heliopsis.

Linum perenne 'Sapphire'
24" Early-Mid Summer
Blue Flax has been a favorite in my gardens since we started in 1991. The outstanding blue flowers drop by midday and the plant starts with new petals in the morning. It is one of the few plants that does not get pruned down in the fall; I leave it until early winter so it will reseed and spread, weaving through the naturalized garden. Thrives with little care making it ideal for our hot, dry summers and clay soils.

Lupine 'Gallery Mix'
30" Mixed; Late spring-early summer
Popular as cut flowers and in the gardens with its palmate foliage that adds contrast. In late summer, I cut back the spent flowers and the foliage if it needs it. Best when planted towards the center or back of the garden with later blooming perennials that will fill in the spaces.

Lysimachia 'Golden Alexander'
30" Variegated green w/gold foliage, Yellow; Summer
Lysimachia forms a dense mat of foliage that forms upright stems with spikes of yellow flowers. Foliage remains nice through the heat of summer when planted in part shade.

Monarda didyma 'Panorama Mix'
36" Mixed Colors; Mid-Late Summer
I have Monarda in both, full sun and part shade; those in part shade seem to do slightly better. Monarda is well-known for attracting hummingbirds into the gardens since their tubular flowers are suited to the bird's feeding habits. The foliage is wonderfully mint scented and the flowers are good for cutting. Overall, an excellent, long-lived perennial.

Nepeta (Catmint) 'Walker's Low'
20" Vigorous spreader; Spring-Fall
Nepeta is a personal favorite because it's so easy to grow and thrives in our region. The foliage is lightly scented and the blooms start early then finish late after a midsummer shearing. This Nepeta is not the reseeding catmint we've offered in the past so it should stay where it's put. The blooms attract honeybees and bumblebees all summer; a characteristic to consider if your allergic or just don't like bees. 'Walker's Low' is the PPA Plant of the Year for 2007.

Oenothera missouriensis
12" Sprawling Groundcover; Late Summer
The flowers on this variety are a full 4 inches across and provide good color through late summer and early fall. Vigorous, so allow the plants plenty of room to spread since they will fill a four square foot area within two-three years. Viable seeds, from large, unusual pods.

Papaver nudicaule 'Champagne Bubbles'
10" Mixed; Summer
Charming tissuepaper like flowers in bright summer colors. Best when planted at the base of medium height perennials or towards the front of the garden. Smaller overall than the orientales, with better foliage.

Double Peonies in Shades of White, Red, and Pink
30" Bushy Habit; Late Spring-Early Summer
Peonies are a long-lived perennial and a traditional favorite. The beautiful, fragrant flowers can be enjoyed in the gardens and as cut flowers for a late spring bouquet. The foliage stays lush through the summer, then turns to deep shades of burgundy through fall. Prefers amended garden soil. Plant just deep enough to cover the crown by about 2-3 inches and allow 3-4 years to become established in the gardens.
Offerings for 2008 include:
Peony 'Ann Cousins'; White
Peony 'Felix Supreme'; Red
Peony "Karl Rosenfield'; Red
Peony 'Shawnee Chief'; Red
Peony 'Dr. Alexander Fleming'; Pink
Peony 'Mons. Jules Elie'; Pink
Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt; Pink

Penstemon barbatus 'Navigator'
16" Mixed Colors; Early-Late Summer
'Navigator' is a dwarf, compact mix of pink, lavender, blue and purple flowers on multibranched stems. Known for attracting hummingbirds, honeybees, and bumblebees into the naturalized garden.

Perovskia atriplicifolia Russian Sage
48" Upright/Bushy; Late Summer
Masses of small flowers form on multibranched stems from August-frost. Must have excellent drainage to do well. Prefers xeric landscape conditions so avoid overwatering through summer and waterlogged soil in winter. Prune to die back in late spring. PPA Plant of the year 1995.

Phlox paniculata 'Eva Cullum' and 'Laura'
30" Upright/Bushy; Summer
Like Peonies, tall garden Phlox are popular since the showy, long lasting flowers are on easy to grow plants that are long-lived and do well in this area. Provide ample water at the base rather than overhead so flowers don't shatter and drop prematurely. We also offer Phlox 'Tenor'
in "fire engine red"; a difficult color to find in perennials.

Phlox subulata 'Emerald Pink' and 'Emerald 'Blue'
6" Groundcover; Spring-Early Summer
Spreading/Groundcover Phlox provides a mass of blooms early in the season and the dense, dark green foliage looks good as it continues to grow through the summer months. Semi-evergreen through winter.

Polemonium 'Blue Whirl'
24"; Spring-Early Summer
Clusters of blue flowers rise above the sturdy, upright stems of this reliable bloomer. The fernlike foliage stays lovely through the heat of summer when planted in part shade and ample water is provided.

Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm'
24"; Late Summer
A hardy Rudbeckia with a profusion of flowers on sturdy stems. Good as a cut flower and a dependable perennial on its own in mass/drifts or in the mixed garden. Compact plant that prefers the front-mid section of the garden. PPA Plant of the Year for 1999.

Salvia 'May Night'
18"; Early-Mid Summer
This Salvia has an upright habit with sturdy stocks/spikes of flowers that look nice when planted with groundcovers at their base. I prune back the stocks in July. Since the flowers and foliage are highly deer resistant, Salvia can be planted in front of less resistant, tall varieties that bloom later in the season. PPA Plant of the Year for 1997.

Saponaria (Soapwort)
8" Grouncover; Late Spring-Early Summer
Ground cover that's perfect in many ways; good foliage and bright, pink flowers through spring and early summer. Prefers ample water if planted in full sun. Popular as a rock garden plant or at the base of shrubs, vines, and perennials. Avoid planting as a groundcover in full shade areas.

Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue' 12" and 'Pink Mist' 18"
Short, mounded foliage; Blooms Mid Summer-Fall
Scabiosas are an easy to grow, dependable perennial. The foliage is "less than perfect" and I often tuck these beauties in with other perennials so that the stems can weave up and through. 'Butterfly Blue' is the Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year for 2000.

Groundcover Sedums 'Voodoo' and 'Angelina'
6" Groundcover; Summer
Sedum's succulent foliage is well suited for our hot, dry summers; avoid overwatering. 'Voodoo'; dark burgundy, 'Angelina'; yellow, and 'Tricolor'; in shades of cream, pink, and green. Each has a distinct foliage texture and spread quickly over berms and at the garden's edge.

'Autumm Joy' is an upright Sedum that grows to 24" and blooms late.

Tanacetum 'Robinson's Dark Crimson'
24"; Early-Mid Summer
Daisies continue to be a favorite with gardeners and 'Dark Crimson' is in that highly sought after shade of red. Plant towards the middle of the garden since the blooms and foliage are at their best in early summer.

Thymus Mother of Thyme, 'Pink Chintz', and 'Woolly'
4" Groundcover; Summer
Fragrant foliage with delicate flowers. Great plants for rock gardens and between pavers since they are durable and release their wonderful fragrance with light foot traffic. Looks best the following spring if sheared in the fall. The blooms attract honeybees; a characteristic to consider if your allergic or just don't like bees.

Veronica 'Royal Candles'
15" Compact and Upright; Late Spring-Summer
Prefers the front area of the garden since the foliage is compact and the spikes stay tight through summer. Very hardy, with long lasting blooms that are lovely as filler in smaller, table bouquets.

Veronica liwanensis
1/2" Groundcover with Cobalt Blue Flowers; Spring
Short, but sweet. These flowers are such a dense, bright blue mat of flowers in spring that they do get noticed. Ideal for edging or in the rock garden since the foliage stays nice through the season. Prefers gravel rather than bark mulch. Cascades over berms and spreads quickly.

In the next section, plants are grouped together by height and light requirements in a select then print format.
