We have over 50 shrubs I would love to sell. They can be viewed and bought (cash or check) by arranging an appointment over the phone @753-5000. Remaining Perennials I Would Love To Sell
Although we are not a mail order greenhouse, we know that many experienced, new to the area, and just getting started gardeners like to plan ahead and come out with a list of possibilities in hand. Our Availability List Pages provide pictures along with cultural information so gardeners can familiarize themselves with the plants we plan to offer through the season.
We offer shrubs for zones 3-4. Unfortunately, there is no standardization in the industry, so you may notice the same shrub listed in one catalog as a zone 3, and in another as zone 4, or even 5. That's why we think it is important to trial the plants here in our display gardens. In the gardens, we watch for overall garden performance including bloom and foliage through the changing seasons. This page includes information about the plant's mature height and spread, cultural requirements, bloom times, and desired traits like outstanding fall color.
Our shrub selection is based on four season attributes in the landscape. With their height, fullness, range of leaf and branching variations, shrubs work well as mass plantings,
hedges, screens, or as a backdrop to the
mixed garden. They allow privacy and a sense of enclosure as we avoid views and noises from intrusive surroundings. Healthy landscapes provide a range of food and shelter to attract beneficial insects and birds adding an element of interest and aesthetic value to the landscape.

Turning to shades of yellow, orange, and red, shrubs continue their seasonal interest into fall as gardeners spend the last warm days of the season out in their gardens. Vibrant, fall colors are a sought after trait in shrubs. Through winter, the mixed garden is often veiwed from indoors, so shrubs prevail as a verticle element providing color and contrast to an otherwise bleak, one dimensional view.
While many of the shrubs we offer are natives, we don't disregard noteworthy plants adapted to our regional climate and soils. All but those indicated with part-shade symbols are best suited for full sun, so avoid planting under large tree canopies or in areas shaded through the day by structures. Also, as is usually the case with full sun plants, full sun shrubs require less water than lawn areas.

Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance'® Serviceberry 25'x 15' Tree form #5@ $52
Brilliant fall leaves persist on heavily branched large shrub/small tree form through fall. Height and spread make this Serviceberry just right for the naturalized landscape.
Berberis thunbergii 'Burgundy Carousel'® 3' x 4' #2@ $28 Barberry with slightly larger, burgundy-purple foliage on slightly arching branches. Highly deer-resistant and an excellent choice for the full sun, xeric garden.
Part-shade
Cornus alba 'Ivory Halo'® 5'x5' #5@ $42
Compact, rounded habit with showy foliage through the season. Brightens shady areas of the landscape. Dramatic contrast when placed in the forefront of the garden with evergreens behind. Works well as an understory planting. Can be used as an east or north facing foundation planting since it remains compact and rounded. Provides attractive red twigs through the winter months.
Part-shade to Cornus serica 'Isanti' 6'x8' and
Cornus baileyi Red Twigged Dogwood 8'x8' #5@ $42
Small white flowers in spring produce porcelain-blue fruits through summer. Showy red branches through the winter months. Suckers so it's well-suited in size for planting as a hedge, privacy screen, or garden backdrop. This is not a suitable shrub for the xeric landscape. The plant tends to wilt when exposed to full sun without scheduled irrigation.
Part-shade to Diervilla Dwarf Bush Honeysuckle 4' x4' #2@ $28
Easy to grow shub with unusual, bronze spring foliage that changes to bronze-green through the summer and then to red bronze through fall. Small yellow flowers in spring. Suckers, so works well as a hedge planting, on sloped areas, and in difficult areas of the landscape.
These evergreens were selected because of their dwarf, dense forms. All distinctive plants for rock gardens, sloped areas, or as specimen plantings. Slow growing and all very hardy.
Shrub roses: Rugosa Roses 5'x5' #2@ $28
Extreemly hardy, these roses are on their own root stock rather than grafted. The flowers produce large, bright red rosehips though fall and into winter. Light pruning in late fall keeps them full and adds vigor through spring. Rugosas do sucker, so they work well as hedges.
Our climbing roses this season include:
'John Cabot' and 'Willam Baffin'; both on own root, very hardy. #2@ $28
Sambuscus canadensis (Elderberry) 'Adams' 10'x10' and 'York' 12'x12'
Fruit is popular for making jam, wine, and attracting birds into the landscape. Profuse, white, flowers that are a full 6-10" across flat-topped cymes. Attractive plant despite suckers and unkempt habit. Native, excellent as large hedge plant in the naturalized landscape. Like last year, we will bring these plants in as bareroot stock and pot up one of each cultivar into a single 15" pulp pot @ $32. This combination ensures maximum fruit production.
Spirea 'Snowmound' 4'x4' #2@ $28
Small clusters of pure white flowers in spring. Plants remain compact without any pruning and fit nicely into the mixed garden. Foliage turns to outstanding shades of orange through fall. Easy to grow and can be used as an east, south, or west facing foundation planting. Prone to breaking under heavy snow, so avoid planting directly under eaves where snow sloughs off the roof.
Syringa vulgaris Common Purple Lilac 12'x12' #5@ $42
Lilacs are by far the most popular favorite with gardeners. These traditional, fragrant beauties are unmatched for hedging, in mass, or in combination with other shrubs. We also offer Syringa 'Sensation'; same height and spread but with distinctive white border on the blooms.
Lilac 'Donald Wyman' 10'x8' #5@ $42
Upright habit with dense branches. Blooms early to mid-June, a full two weeks later than the common Lilac. Fragrant blooms are on large, pyramidial spikes.
Viburnum dentatum 'Red Feather'® 8'x12' #5@ $42
Gets its name from the two-tone new growth, maroon and green, that resembles the feathers at the base of an arrow. The flat, white flowers appear from mid-late June, followed by blue-black berries, and ending the season with outstanding fall foliage.
