Although we are not a mail order greenhouse, we know that many experienced, new to the area, and just getting started gardeners like to plan ahead and come out with a wish list of possibilities in hand. Our Availability List Pages provide pictures along with cultural information about the plants we plan to offer.
Our shrub selections are based on seasonal attributes in the landscape. Varieties are available in a range of mature plant sizes, leaf and branching variations, and bloom times so they work well as hedges and screens, as a backdrop for or within a
mixed garden, as mass/group plantings, and as stand alone plantings in the landscape. Shrubs provide privacy and a sense of enclosure as we avoid views and noises from intrusive surroundings by creating spaces to relax and enjoy being outdoors. Diverse landscapes provide a range of food and shelter to attract beneficial insects and birds adding an element of interest and aesthetic value to the landscape.
Mantis eggs in protective winter casing and into adults in summer.
A few years back, I brought one of these casings into the greenhouse to show customers what to be looking for in their landscapes. Whithout much thought to it, I left the casing on our sales desk by the register. I walked in the greenhouse one morning to discover dozens of ¼ inch mantes pouring out of it. I'm sure it was quite a sight as I scrambled to gingerly "escort" them out of the greenhouse into a nearby garden.
Turning to shades of yellow, orange, and red, shrubs continue their seasonal interest into fall as gardeners spend the last warm days of the season out in their gardens. Vibrant, fall colors are a sought after trait in shrubs. Through winter, the mixed garden is often veiwed from indoors, so shrubs prevail as a verticle element providing color and contrast to an otherwise bleak, one dimensional view.
While many of the shrubs we offer are natives, we don't disregard noteworthy plants adapted to our regional climate and soils. All but those indicated with a part-shade symbol are best suited for full sun, so avoid planting under large tree canopies or in areas shaded through the day by structures.
Plants with a water-wise symbol do well in a xeriscape grouped together with other water-wise trees, shrubs, and perennials. The plants, once established, (second-third year after planting) will thrive with less-frequent, but thorough watering applied directly at the roots.
Garden Designs have moved from foundation to curb since they are often viewed from inside the home. The mixed garden that includes shrubs, perennials, and annuals provides a screen from roadways and allows us to enjoy the gardens from inside looking out as well as from a deck or patio. Garden walls are easy to install and give homeowners a sense of privacy.

Ribes alpinum Alpine Currant 3'x5' $28.00
Densly leafed shrub suitable for hedges in open or part-shade areas. Responds well to pruning so desired height and fullness can be maintained. When planting a hedge, trenching, rather than digging individual holes, allows the roots to spread more quickly.
Rugosa Mauve and Ramblin' Red® Climbing Rose
Hardy to our area, these roses are on their own root stock rather than grafted. Rugosa is a larger landscape/shrub rose that grows to a full 5' x 5'. The flowers produce large, bright red rosehips though fall and into winter. Light pruning of older wood in late fall keeps Rugosas full and adds vigor through spring. 'Ramblin' Red' is our climing rose for the season. Roses are $32.00
Salix Dwarf Blue Artic Willow 4'x4' $28.00 Rounded Blue Artic Willows have narrow leaves on thin stems which give the shrub its billowing quality. Compact habit precludes need for pruning. Lilac 'Tinkerbelle'® 5'x5' $42.00
Syringa 'Tinkerbelle'
Viburnum trilobum 'Wentworth' 10'x12' $42.00,
Viburnum lantana 'Mohican' 6'x8' $42.00 and Viburnum dentatum 'Blue Muffin'® 5'x5' $32.00
These Viburnums have white flowers in spring, outstanding fall foliage, and finish the season with brightly colored fruit through winter. Viburnums are a personal favorite since they are very hardy and easy to grow. Though customers ask for "Snowball" trees, we have steered away from Viburnum opulus because, while the flowers are very showy, the plants don't provide the seasonal interest, shape, fruit, and fall foliage, that make other Viburnums standouts in the landscape.
Vines mature over time to create dense foliage with colorful, fragrant blooms through summer then add dramatic fall foliage to the landscape.
'Mandarin', 'Honeybelle'TM and 'Kintzley's Ghost'® $14.99
Vines are popular because they are easy to grow and thrive in this area. We don't prune ours, but instead allow them to grow freely.
