Welcome to our website!
We are closing for the season on Saturday, July 26th.
Hours this week are 10-3 Monday-Saturday.

We hope gardeners will continue to shop through the week for perennials and shrubs; we will continue to plant in our gardens through the summer. Remaining selections are well cared for and in good condition.

Although we are not a mail order greenhouse, we know that many experienced, new to the area, and just getting started gardeners like to plan ahead and come out with a list of possibilities in hand. Our Availability List Pages provide pictures and cultural information so gardeners can familiarize themselves with the shrubs, perennials, and annuals we offer and will be updated through the season.

We offer shrubs for zones 3-4. Unfortunately, there is no standardization in the industry, so you may notice the same shrub listed in one catalog as a zone 3, and in another as zone 4, or even 5. That's why I think it is important to trial the plants here in our display gardens. The plant's height and width are provided along with a brief description.
In the gardens, we watch for overall garden performance including bloom and foliage through the changing seasons.

Our shrub selection is based on four season attributes in the landscape. With their height, fullness, range of leaf and branching variations, shrubs work well as mass plantings, hedges, screens, or as a backdrop to the mixed garden. They allow privacy and a sense of enclosure as we avoid views and noises from intrusive surroundings. Healthy landscapes provide a range of food and shelter to attract beneficial insects and birds adding an element of interest and aesthetic value to the landscape.

Mantis eggs in protective winter casing and into adults in summer.

Turning to shades of yellow, orange, and red, shrubs continue their seasonal interest into fall as gardeners spend the last warm days of the season out in their gardens. Vibrant, fall colors are a sought after trait in shrubs. Through winter, the mixed garden is often veiwed from indoors looking out, so the importance of shrubs prevails as a verticle element providing color and contrast to an otherwise bleak, one dimensional view.

While many of the shrubs we offer are natives, we don't disregard noteworthy plants adapted to our regional climate and soils. All but those indicated with part-shade symbols are best suited for full sun, so avoid planting under large tree canopies. Also, as is usually the case with full sun plants, full sun shrubs require less water than lawn areas.

After the Picture Gallery there is a Select and Print section.
Towards the end of this page are a few Garden Designs. The examples include various garden shapes and sizes with notes on the numbers of plants needed to fill the area.

Amelanchier 'Regent' Serviceberry 4'x6'
White spring flowers. Native plant, easy to grow. Yellow-Orange leaves through fall. Edible fruit that attracts birds into the landscape. Suckers; well suited as a hedge or within the mixed border garden.

Aronia melanocarpa (Chokeberry) 5'x5'
White flowers in late spring; purplish-black fruit persists through winter. Adaptable plant suited for either wet or dry areas. Red-Orange leaves through fall. Fruit attracts birds into the landscape. Suckers; well suited for any naturalized landscape.

Cornus 'Ivory Halo' 5'x5'
Compact, rounded habit with showy foliage through the season. Brightens shady areas of the landscape. Dramatic contrast when placed in the forefront of the garden with evergreens behind.

Cornus Red Twig Dogwood 8'x8'
Showy red branches through the winter months. Fruit attracts birds through late summer-fall-winter. Suckers; well suited in size for planting as a hedge, privacy screen, or garden backdrop.

Forsythia 'Northern Gold' 6'x5' Upright Habit
Forsythias bloom before the foliage comes on, so the flowers really stand out. Lovely with tulips for high impact and low maintenance spring color.

Lonicera 'Mandarin' 20' Vine
'Mandarin' and other vines provide a verticle element to the landscape design while providing summer color and privacy from intrusive views.

Parthenocissus Engelman Ivy 30' Vine (Shown with Clematis)

Physocarpus 'Diablo'Rounded Habit 8'x8'
Foliage contrasts nicely with its creamy-white flowers in early summer and, as shown here, when planted with shorter shrubs in the forefront.

Prunus virginiana 'Shubert Select' 20'x20'
Green leaves change to red later in the season. Variety of native Chokecherry. Red fruit through summer attract birds into the landscape. Prefers well-drained soil; avoid overwatering and planting in waterlogged areas through spring .

Sambuscus canadensis (Elderberry) 'Adams' 10'x10' and 'York' 12'x12'
Fruit is popular for making jam, wine, and attracting birds into the landscape. Profuse, white, flowers that are a full 6-10" across flat-topped cymes. Attractive plant despite suckers and unkempt habit. Native, excellent as large hedge plant in the naturalized landscape.

Viburnum 'Bailey Compact' 5'x5' and 'Mohican' 6'x6'
'Bailey Compact', a rounded form of the American Cranberrybush, and 'Mohican' both have white, flat-topped flowers through spring, scarlet berries though late summer, and beautiful deep bronze-red foliage through fall. Outstanding as additions to the mixed shrub bed since they provide four season attributes to the landscape.

The importance of shrubs as structural elements in the landscape is unwavering, but a recent trend is the incorporation of dwarf and compact varieties into the perennial border. The successful interplay between smaller shrubs and perennials has given rise to the hybridization, promotion, and availability of these new plants. The Proven Winners ColorChoice Flowering Shrub Collection is one such program.
All varieties listed are new for us this year. Since we have no experience with them in the gardens, we suggest planting in amended soils, providing ample water to establish, and in areas of the landscape that are protected from both winter, and summer, winds.

Caryopteris incana 'Sunshine Blue' 3'x3': Golden foliage, blue flowers.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Claudie' 3'x3': Large pink flowers.
Hydrangea paniculata 'Little Lamb' 4'x4': Fluffy, white panicle flowers.
Kolkwitzia amabilis 'Dream Catcher' 5'x5': Golden yellow foliage.
Physocarpus opulifolius 'Coppertina' 5'x5': Burnt orange foliage.
Weigela florida 'Wine and Roses' 4'x4': Burgundy foliage, pink flowers.
